Navigating India's Plastic Waste Management Rules

An interactive guide to the Plastic Waste Management (PWM) Rules, 2016, and its amendments. This tool demystifies the regulations, making it easy to understand key obligations, targets, and responsibilities for all stakeholders.

Key Principle: EPR

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is the cornerstone of the rules, making producers, importers, and brand owners financially and operationally responsible for managing plastic packaging through its entire lifecycle.

Single-Use Plastic Ban

A significant number of single-use plastic items have been prohibited since July 1, 2022, to curb pollution from low-utility, high-littering potential products. Explore the full list in the 'Key Regulations' section.

Centralized Portal

A unified online portal managed by the CPCB is central to the framework, handling registration, action plan submissions, and annual reporting for all obligated entities to ensure transparency and streamlined compliance.

Core Rules & Restrictions

This section highlights the most critical regulations that apply broadly, including the ban on specific single-use plastic items and mandatory thickness standards for various plastic products.

Prohibited Single-Use Plastic Items (Effective July 1, 2022)

To combat pollution, the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale, and use of the following items are prohibited. These items were selected based on their low utility and high littering potential.

Minimum Thickness & GSM Standards

To improve collectability and recycling potential, minimum thickness and density standards have been set for certain plastic products. Thicker plastics are generally easier to collect and have higher value in the recycling market.
